The mapping project pages shown here are part of the website of the Sierra Leone Truth & Reconciliation Commission. Currently the mapping project pages are under construction.
The content is at the working prototype stage, providing enough information to give a good illustration of how the finalised site will work. Currently the Introduction pages are complete with links to information on pre-war events that shaped the subsequent conflict. Following on from this, maps and key events are also available for the first 2 years of the war, 1991 and 1992. The mapping of the violations reported to the TRC that were attributed to the Revolutionary United Front (RUF) continues to 1995 - to view these select the appropriate year in the menu above.
Completion of the mapping project will involve:
Extending the maps and associated events through to the end of the war in the year 2000. In the final phase of the war maps will also include abuses attributed to the Armed Forces Revolutionary Council (AFRC) forces where this is appropriate.
Additionally the Recommendations page will provide mapped links to post-war events that illustrate the ongoing need to implement many of the TRC's recommendations.
This 'About' page will ultimately include details of the methodology used to produce the violation maps.
The mapping project has been developed and implemented by the TRC's former Database Manager, Richard Conibere. For any enquiries, please see the contact given on the Research Data Resources page.
